The origins of Ancient Greece

Map of Ancient Greece with the territories of its different tribes.

In order to understand the culture, the arts and, therefore, Greek music, it is necessary to review all of its history since it is a civilization that went through different stages before being constituted as ancient Greece.

There is a long period of almost 2,000 years that goes from the Bronze Age to the appearance of the Greek civilization itself, called the Heládic or Protogriego period.

They differ in this period Heladico 4 epochs of evolution:

- The Ancient Heládico from approximately 2,600 BC to 2,000 BC, where the populations of the current Balkan Peninsula and islands of the Aegean Sea progressively engaged in agriculture and sedentary life. In their majors, the Carians, Achaeans and Hittites (civilizations of which no information is available about their music but which is possible due to their commercial relations and successive invasions in Egyptian territory that share common instruments).

- The Middle Helladic that lasted about 4 centuries from 2,000 BC to 1,600 BC. Agriculture continued to evolve, the first ceramic chromatic artifacts were found and horses were domesticated for use in transport as well as in war.

- The recent Hellenic or Mycenaean Old that begins at the end of the Middle Helladic and concludes in 1400 BC It is a time of great migrations, especially of Achaeans (who come to conquer the island of Crete), had a great command of bronze for everything type of uses: primarily in swords but also in all kinds of objects mainly in musical instruments. Among these instruments are the percussion instruments such as the " rattlesnakes " (also seen in Egypt because the Achaeans and Egyptians not only traded but also documented several wars and mutual invasions).

- The Recent Mycenae in which the Achaeans have greater dominance (from this period date the poems of Homer "The Iliad" and "The Odyssey" that tell the story of the Trojan War where Achilles commands the Achaeans and destroys the city troyana).
The Mycenaean culture disappears in 1150 BC due to the invasions of the other Proto-Greek tribes: the Dorians, Ionians and Thessalians, destroying the predominance of the Achaeans over those lands.

All these tribes with their independent cultures merged into what would later be Greece: the Sparta of the Dorians and the Athens of the Achaeans, Ionians and Thessalians.
